Ghost Towh Shoot - Picher, Cardin & Treece
Posted on March 13, 2009
Our friends at the meetup.com Tulsa Digital Photography Group are hosting a Ghost Town shoot tomorrow. We mentioned it at the meeting and I have since had several members contact me regarding it so I thought I would post a link.
From the Tulsa Digital Photography Group page,
We will meet in East Tulsa, at the north entrance to the casino at 193rd and I-44, and carpool up the Will Rogers Turnpike, past Miami and Commerce (home of Mickey Mantle) to Oklahoma’s very own Superfund site.
Most of the town has been bought by the federal government. There are many old “ghost town” type dilapated buildings from the first part of the last century. There are still remnants of the tornado that swept through last year. And of course, there are the infamous “chat piles”. These are pretty eerie looking and in many places they look like big gray sand dunes. If you can catch the light just right, the possibilities are endless.
Of course, we can’t get on the chat piles (duh!). And there are still a few fools living there that we need to avoid. But the rest seems to be fair game.
We should arrive before 10:30, shoot for a couple of hours, then go back the twelve miles to Miami to eat and discuss the shoot. After lunch, back to shoot a couple more hours before returning to Tulsa.
There are a lot of things to shoot and enough area to get spread out and not crowd each other. I had driven through Picher before but never got off the highway. I didn’t realize how many things there are that are interesting to shoot.
We would like to carpool if possible. After all, it is a little over an hour and a half drive. We might as well spend it talking about cameras and photography.
